Glennallen is a very small census-designated place (CDP) located in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area, which is a part of Alaska’s Unorganized Borough that covers over half of the state. As of 2010, the Glennallen CDP had a population of 483, and a total area of 114.9 square miles with 114.1 square miles of land and 0.8 square miles water. Glennallen is in the continental climate zone which means that it experiences warm, short summers and very cold, long winters. Glennallen’s average yearly temperature is a very cool 23 F. On average high temperatures in the summer reach into the mid-60s while average low temperatures in the winter drop as low as -19 F. However, extreme winter temperatures can get as low as -50 F and summer temperatures as high as 80 F! So, be sure you’re prepared for extreme changes in temperatures between seasons as well as frigid temperatures in the winter!

Glennallen Education
The Copper River School District serves Glennallen and is comprised of four schools and a correspondence program for children living in rural and remote parts of the Copper River Valley. There is one school located in Glennallen, Glennallen School, which provides education to all students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Glennallen is also home to Alaska Bible College, which is an accredited four-year non-denominational Christian college that offers certificates and degrees in Bible studies.

Getting Around Glennallen
Driving is the best way to get around Glennallen, as it is linked to two nearby major highways. The Glenn Highway provides access to the western part of the state and the Richardson Highway provides access to the north and south. Additionally, the Gulkana Airport is located a short four miles northeast of Glennallen.

Even though Glennallen doesn’t have a huge population, there are still a number of things to do right in the city. The Ahtna Cultural Center is located in Glennallen and has exhibits featuring collections and artifacts dedicated to preserving the Ahtna culture and language in the Ahtna region.
