Whether you’re moving to Cooper Landing to start a new career or just to make a change of place, we have no doubt that “The Landing,” as it’s called by those who know it, can be the place you call home. Cooper Landing is a small town about 100 miles south of Anchorage and located on the Kenai River of the Kenai Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, the population was estimated to be a cozy 289 residents. The town brings in most of its revenue via its fishing industry and tourism.

Highpoints of Moving to Cooper Landing

Location – Cooper Landing is nestled at the foot of an expansive mountain range along the confluence of Kenai Lake and its river. This makes it a natural haven for the avid outdoorsman or woman. The town is well known for what it has to offer in terms of recreation and exploration. It is a popular destination for summer adventurers thanks to its bountiful forestland, and its proximity to the salmon fishery that is the Kenai Watershed Forum makes it a world-renowned wildlife refuge. So if peace, quiet, and an outdoor paradise are what you’re looking for, you’ll find plenty of it and more at The Landing!

History and Sustainability – Cooper Landing is named for Joseph Cooper who found gold there in 1884, and by 1900, only 22 citizens resided there. It was not until 1938 that a road was constructed to make the passage between Cooper Landing and its closest neighbor, Seward, drivable. In 1951 a road to Anchorage was constructed, and in 1958, the Cooper Lake Hydroelectric Facility and dam were built, all of which still provide routes of transportation and electricity for this small, independent-minded town.

Community – The people of Cooper Landing pride themselves on maintaining a small and tight-knit community of rugged individualists. Many of them run small businesses (i.e. historic Gwin’s Lodge, the popular Sunrise Inn, and countless fishing and hiking guide agencies) that are patronized by tourists and locals year-round! The town also maintains “an eclectic little log library in a rural roadside hamlet,” known in polite circles as the Cooper Landing Community Library, which has served its rustic community since 1983. And finally, whatever your needs may be, from business advertising to bear awareness, you will find anything you need as a community member at the Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce!

Best wishes for moving to this spectacularly beautiful place!
