Moving to Fort Richardson

Fort Richardson houses about 8,000 soldiers, many of whom are active military members. In fact, Fort Richardson is home to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, the only airborne brigade combat team in the Pacific Theater. The United States Army Alaska is also headquartered there.

Before you arrive, familiarize yourself with JBER arrival procedures, and gate hours. It’s also good to learn as much as you can about the base before arriving. Here’s some important information:

  • There are five elementary schools on base.
  • All housing is privatized on base and operated by Aurora Military Housing.
  • The base provides many services, including a fitness center, commissary, support squadron, bank and credit union, community hospital, childcare, veterinary services, and chapel.
  • Have pets? You’ll be glad to know that the base allows two domestic pets per home.

You can learn more about what JBER offers by reading this installation guide.

These are just some of the outdoor adventures you and your family can take part in after moving to Fort Richardson:

  • Visit Chugach State Park, the third-largest state park in the country.
  • See the sights from above on a helicopter tour.
  • Charter a boat and go fishing – you may catch something good to eat for dinner.
  • View Alaskan wildlife up close at the Alaska Zoo.
  • Hike the paved Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.
  • Play a round or two of disc golf at Kincaid Park.
  • Explore native Alaska by visiting the historic Eklutna Village.
