Number one point since this is a moving website: If you are looking for a local moving service or a company to load/unload your truck, call Chapas Moving in McAllen. You WILL NOT be sorry. I work in a Federal Building and the employees here have used them over and over again. There is no BS going on. They?ll be there and the job will be done. We all think they are great. McAllen has really expanded in the last few years. We now have PF Chang, Longhorn Steakhouse as well as our local gems such as Santa Fe Steakhouse and Republic of the Rio Grande. The new, expanded Convention Center is drawing comedians and musicians although most large-scale acts such as George Straight and Shakira still play at the Hidalgo Area (Formerly Dodge, now State Farm). Sams Club, WalMart, Target, Hobby Lobby, Red Lobster, Olive Garden have all decided to build at least 2 locations; 1 north and 1 near Expressway 83 to serve the growing community. There is an Outlet mall in Mercedes, TX. HEB and Wal-Mart are our main grocery stores. The trauma center is McAllen Medical Center. Rio Grande Regional Hospital is just a few blocks away. The ER is great and is also a pediatric ER. The Children Hospital with a pediatric-specific ER is in Edinburg. There is also a fantastic surgical/woman?s hospital on the border of McAllen and Edinburg called Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. Police and Fire Departments are good. EMS is a private service versus a City-run service. I would prefer a City Fire/EMS Department. Local (read: long-term Valley family) politics are brutal down here, so I do not see that happening any time soon. You better believe money talks down here. The elementary school consistently recognized in McAllen is Milam Elementary. Many people move to ?Sharyland? which is a SCHOOL DISTRICT that contains area in McAllen and Mission. I cannot stress enough that Sharyland is not a city Valley Gente! We are appx 1 hour from Brownsville, TX and 1 - 1.25 hours from South Padre Island. All along Expressway 83 is pretty much one big strand of city from Brownsville to Mission. We are appx 4 hours from San Antonio, TX. Now, the people of the Valley??.well, on-time is not a major concern down here. Service is mediocre. Si no hablas espanol, Aprendala! (I hope you speak Spanish). No matter what the politicians say. WE HAVE SPILLOVER CARTEL VIOLENCE all along the border. But for all of its shortcoming, the Valley has beautiful, warm people. We are heavily influenced by Mexico, so the malls will be PACKED on the weekend, Mexico holidays and Christmas-time. But, in return you will also enjoy a relatively stable economy that does not depend on or fluctuate with market trends that are hitting big cities right now.
