Moving to the Greater New Haven Area?
Great culture, rich history, free music festivals, and Yale, one of the most storied universities in the United States. Who wouldn't want to move to New Haven, CT? Naturally a city with this much history has multiple museums and historical sites. But it has much more to offer residents. Let’s take a look!
- With a population of 129,779, New Haven is the perfect size with enough amenities, but not too big to overwhelm you.
- New Haven, CT is nicknamed “The Elm City” because of its beautiful greenery.
- The weather is typical of the area with warm, humid summers and cold winters. Don’t fret; the winters get moderate snowfall, but not huge blizzards.
- When moving to New Haven, you will have a variety of neighborhoods to visit. Along with Downtown and the business district, other areas to consider are Dixwell (an area for student living), Dwight (a historic district full of beautiful homes), and The Hill (home of Yale Medical School), and Wooster Square (the Italian District).
- While visiting Wooster Square, be sure and try the local New Haven-style pizza, called apizza (pronounced “ah-beets”). Apizza is a Neopolitan-style pizza with a thin crust, sauce and pecorino romano. Tip: if you want mozzarella, it is considered a topping, and ask for “mootz.”
- Another local favorite is white clam pizza. Because of New Haven being a college town, pizza reigns supreme.
- Along with Yale, New Haven is home to Southern Connecticut State University, and other higher education institutions.
- If you are moving to New Haven, CT with children, they will find their place in the New Haven Public School system or one of the private schools in the area.
- New Haven was a planned community. Originally, New Haven had a grid layout with nine squares. The center square was left as a green space, called New Haven Green. The New Haven Symphony Orchestra plays many concerts there.
