(FORT SMITH, Ark – March 2008) Students at Trusty Elementary are learning about working together and serving the community. Proceeds from a current recycling effort will benefit two worthwhile projects. As part of the Partners in Education program, students were challenged to find a group project that would help the school and the community. The Student Leadership Council, a student organization at Trusty, came up with an idea that would accomplish these goals and help the environment as well. Proceeds from the recycling project will go toward much-needed playground equipment and the city’s Bass Reeves statue fundraising effort. The statue of famous lawman Bass Reeves will be part of the National U.S. Marshal’s Museum to be located in Fort Smith. The public is encouraged to donate used newspapers to the school. A competition between the classrooms has students vying to bring in the most newspapers. In addition to used newspapers, students are recycling their school work papers. ABF U-Pack Moving® is providing a ReloCube® for storage and transportation of the papers for the project. ABF® is also a Partner in Education with Trusty Elementary. Recently, students participated in a job-shadowing day at ABF. They learned about various careers in the transportation field. The Partners in Education program establishes mutually beneficial relationships between businesses and schools. The business, community agency or organization and their partner school commit themselves to reciprocal activities that are based on the needs and resources of the partners. Partnership activities and events are aligned with the goals of the school or school district. Trusty Elementary Principal Rick Foti says, “The children have chosen an ambitious project involving plenty of learning opportunities, a lot of hard work and hopefully a nice reward at the end. We’re proud of them.” To donate newspapers contact Trusty Elementary 783-7720. The project ends in mid-April. U-Pack® is a service of ABF Freight System, Inc. ®, an award-winning transporter of general commodities. In 1997, ABF began offering its shipping services directly to consumers via U-Pack Moving. In doing so, the carrier introduced an alternative means of moving residential and business belongings cross country. U-Pack combines the professional driver and equipment of a traditional full-service mover with the cost savings of a rental truck.
