There are many ways to enjoy the summer in New York City.

There are many ways to enjoy the summer in New York City.

If you are thinking about heading to New York City with your moving boxes, going there in the summer might not be a bad idea. The city is quite vibrant all year around, but it really comes to life in the summer, providing activities that everyone in the family can enjoy. There are many different parts of this major metro that have different summer fun, whether you plan to stay on dry land, or hit the water.

Coney Island
One of the best spots in New York City during the summer is the one that is most closely related to New York summers. Coney Island is located in Brooklyn, and it is the home of many different fun events. This includes miles of beaches, as well as an amusement park, according to the City of New York's Parks and Recreation department. This area also has a minor league baseball stadium, and has plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors on your own. If you want to take part in many recreational sports, you can do it here on the many courts available.

Fourth of July fireworks
Another staple of the New York summer is how it spends its Fourth of July festivities. If you like fireworks, you may want to be in and around Manhattan, as the fireworks display is quite notable. According to NYCGo.com, the event, sponsored by Macy's, has close to 40,000 fireworks shells going off over the Hudson River on the night of the holiday. For more fun during the day, you can check out the famous hot dog eating contest that occurs annually on Coney Island.

Park picnicking and grilling
If you are a fan of bringing the family out to the park during the day, New York City may have exactly what you are looking for. Plenty of parks allow for open grilling around the city, which can make your excursion even more enjoyable. Depending on where you plan on living, there may be a park that is perfect for you. According to Time Out New York, one of these is Riverside Park, located north of W 145th Street, right on the Hudson. While you have to bring your own grill, this destination is quite spacious, so you may be able to easier enjoy your own party without being bothered.

However, some parks require permits. One that requires this, but may still be a perfect spot is East River Park, according to Time Out New York. Plan ahead, and you can see a spacious landscape of Brooklyn in the park while enjoying your day.

Shakespeare in the Park
There are multiple annual events that take place in the city during the year, and one that you may enjoy is the Shakespeare in the Park event. This takes place from late May to mid-August, according to NYCGo.com. It is a live theater show in Central Park, which allows people to come out for free and take in some of William Shakespeare's most famous plays. The even has occurred every year since the early 1960s.

Water sports
If you prefer to hang out in or on the water, you may want to check out the many tours and boating excursions in the Hudson River. One of these is Jet skiing, which takes place around the shores of both Manhattan and Brooklyn, according to Time Out New York. You can rent equipment and enjoy the sights, or you can take advantage of a tour of the Big Apple from the water. Just head to Brooklyn and visit Jetty Jumpers.
