Colorado River
One spot you may want to start off your fishing experience is the Colorado River. Less than two hours west of Houston, it has plenty of fishing options to get you going. According to the Houston Chronicle, there are a number of fish types in the river, so you may never be too sure about what your are going to catch. Multiple kinds of bass are located in the river, and you may even see some catfish while there. The changes in the river's speed may help you catch different types.

Lake Livingston
Another spot that may be attractive is to check out what Lake Livingston has to offer. This spot is actually a reservoir, and it has many different options for area anglers. The bass is prevalent in this body of water, but you may want to be nimble while traveling around it. There is a sizable amount of plant life around the shores of the lake.

Lake Houston has a number of different fish in it, but according to the Houston Chronicle, it may be a good idea to focus on catfish while here. The lake is filled with them, and it may be a good bet to catch one, or even a few. There are some other fish that are popular in this area, so don't be surprised to see shad, as well.

Somerville Lake
Southeast Texas has another lake that may be perfect for a day-long dishing excursion, especially if you enjoy a certain type of fish. Head to Somerville Lake, and you may be able to catch a notable amount of bass here, according to TexasBassFishing.com. This lake isn't far from Houston, so it could work as a go-to if you like that type of fish. The area has a diverse landscape, so don't be surprised if you run into a significant amount of vegetation in one area, and are able to get right up to the lake in another spot.

Lake Conroe
If you are seeking out another lake that is diverse and well-stocked, it could be beneficial to try Lake Conroe. According to the Houston Chronicle, this spot is known for its catfish, as it has a fishery on the lake. You don't have to stop at these fish, though. There are a whole slew of fishing choices here including a number of bass types, and even crappies. This could be a good place to check out if you like hanging around a lake during the spring or summer. The area is filled with catfish during this time.
