The Boston Common may be a good spot if you like city parks.

One of the main fixtures of most cities is not the skyscrapers, but the bit of recreational land below them. Whether you just want to get to a spot with some trees and shade, or you need a break from office life, having a nice city park around you may be the right formula. The East Coast is filled with cities that have attractive city park options, and it doesn't matter if you want to bring your moving boxes north or south. There are plenty of opportunities here to give you a fun experience to enjoy the outdoors when dealing with living in an urban area.

Governors Island, New York City
While many people think of parks right in the center of the city, New York City has one that is a bit off the beaten path. Governors Island is a former military base just off of Manhattan, and it has plenty of things to do. According to Travel and Leisure, it has many different concerts throughout much of the year, and it is also the home of a beach. It's easy to get to, as you can take a ferry for free from Manhattan. When you are traveling around the island, you can rent a bike, as driving isn't allowed.

Boston Common
Another park that is a staple in the Northeastern section of the country is in Boston. The Boston Common is situated in the downtown section of the city, and there are plenty of opportunities to hang out and enjoy nature. According to the City of Boston, it is the oldest park in the country, and is quite big. It spans approximately 50 acres, which gives you an ability to hang out with friends, or sit in a quieter, less traveled section. The Common is located near multiple stations on the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority subway, which can make it easier to get around.

Piedmont Park, Atlanta
Heading south will bring you to another park that may be a great choice to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Piedmont Park, located in Atlanta, is a staple for concerts of all types. According to Travel and Leisure, this area has a jazz festival every May. It also has many different areas to participate in recreational activities, including a bocce court, a pool and a spot for children to beat the heat and run under sprinklers.

Central Park, New York City
Going back up north will get you to one of the most famous city parks in the world. Central Park is a spot that may be great for those who want to experience the heart of New York City. It has approximately 250 acres of lawn space, according to New York City's Central Park Conservancy. It also is the home of wide lake spans, as well as many natural wonders. If you are looking for an area to get in some sports, there are more than 25 ball fields in the park. If you are bringing kids, they have many playground areas, as well.

Patterson Park, Baltimore
Maryland is also the home of a famous park, and if you decide on Baltimore, you may want to check out Patterson Park. The area has a boat lake, where you can not only fish, but also see the many different types of wildlife that live in the area, according to the Friends of Patterson Park. In the winter, there is an ice skating rink that can be accessed. However, if you are there in the summer, it may be a good idea to check out the outdoor swimming pool.
