South and West boom in population growth

Along with the South, the West was another region that saw a population increase over the past 10 years.

Along with the South, the West was another region that saw a population increase over the past 10 years.

A new report is indicating where Americans have been moving to over the past 10 years.

According to a U.S. Census Bureau report of the country's population distribution, a significant percentage of people have been heading to southern and western locales. The report found that the South and West accounted for almost 85 percent of the country's population increase, with 10 states containing approximately half of the country's 308 million people. Twenty five percent of the population live in California, Texas and New York.

The report also looked into the population density of metropolitan areas and found that these areas have generally grown over the past 10 years. For instance, more than half of Georgia's population growth occurred in Atlanta's metro area and 80 percent of Nevada's population increase took place in Las Vegas' metropolitan region. The fast growing metro area over the past decade was in Florida's Palm Coast.

The past decade also had more people moving to the city, as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago remain the three most populous.

Last month, a study released by RE/MAX Northern Illinois found several towns surrounding Chicago also saw increases in home sales in 2010.
