Young children often don't understand the concept of moving, and may even feel like their parents are packing up to leave them behind, the Washington Times reports.
"Moving is a big adjustment for the whole family, but children are particularly vulnerable to confusion, anger and grief, as they may not be able to comprehend the 'big picture' of how the move will benefit the family," Carrie Singer, a clinical psychologist in Alexandria, Virginia, told the paper.
To help with the process, Singer told the paper that it can be useful to have a going-away party, to show that the move is worth celebrating - even if it's just across town.
It can also help to involve kids in the moving process themselves. Saratogian contributor Janet Besheer suggests having children help pack their own clothes and toys, and label all the moving boxes to help them feel involved.
