Creating copies of keys is important when moving into your home.
After your moving company brings your items to your new residence and you get everything inside, there are some important measures to take to ensure your home is ready for your family.
One of the first items you should do is to make extra keys. This can be done at most hardware stores, and purchasing more keys will only cost a few dollars each. Each family member that you deem old enough to have a key should have one. This will make it much easier for them to get in if no one else is home, or those in the house are asleep, or cannot hear the doorbell.
Placing a spare key in a hidden area will help you in the event that you or a loved one is locked out. This can also be beneficial if you go on vacation, or are out of town, and a family member or friend needs to look after the house. However, do not make the location of the key known to anyone unless they need to use it. Switching the key to different areas sporadically will help improve security.
Having a fire extinguisher on each floor is very important, and you should check what kind you will need, as not all are the same. Depending on the room and what is in it, you can look up what extinguishers are needed.
You should also create a fire plan for the home. Every family member should know what to do in the event of a fire, and practicing it will be important. While you may have had one in your old home, the unfamiliarity of your new residence should prompt an update.
