Moving Tips: Keep your back healthy when moving

Back injuries can happen when moving.

Back injuries can happen when moving.

When everything is packed and ready to be moved, it is important to transport it safely. Many people may think they can just grab boxes as they go without thinking, but this could cause serious health problems. Back injuries are a very real risk when moving heavy items, so minimizing the risk will help make the process easier and won't knock you out of being able to help.

It may seem silly, but this step is very important: make sure you stretch before moving boxes for the day. Doing this will get your body conditioned for the strenuous activities. Just like going out to play a sport or running a few miles, moving items takes a toll on the body. Making sure that your body is prepared for it will help.

Don't think you can move anything. Some items and boxes are just too heavy for one person. When packing, keep this in mind. Using more light boxes may actually be easier later on. However, if you have a large, heavy item, and you cannot move it solo, don't be afraid to ask for help. It is better to take a little time to move something than to risk hurting yourself.

It is important to correctly lift anything that is being moved. Bending with your knees instead of your back will help lessen spinal strain and will keep your muscles from getting hurt. Also, jerking in one motion can really injure a person, so avoid rapid movements. A slow descent and ascent will work the best. Again, trying to do more than you can, especially in a rush or "showing-off" situation, can get you severely hurt.

Taking the items that need to be moved and putting them in a particular order, or developing a plan for the move may make everything easier. Having to multi-task with unfinished packing could put extra strain on your body, so making sure everything is prepared is the best route to go.

If you start to feel that something is not right, take a break. That could be your body telling you that it is over-exerted. Relaxing for a few minutes and stretching out may help tremendously, and this could leave you ready for another round of boxes.
