Moving Tips: Hanging wall items

Hanging photos needs to be done correctly.

Hanging photos needs to be done correctly.

If you were busy packing pictures when getting ready to move out of your old residence, you will want to hang them up after your moving company arrives. There are some specific things that need to be done in order to properly hang wall decorations of all kinds, and doing it correctly will prevent a mess.

Hanging photos doesn't have to be difficult, but it is important to be careful before you mark up your walls. If you see a place where a photo would be a good idea, make sure to find where the stud is in your wall. You can do this with a stud finder, or just looking for the area that doesn't sound hollow. Once you find this, put a pencil dot at the spot where you want to drive in the nail.

Keep in mind that you will want to make sure it looks right, as hanging it too high or low may not get the preferred result. Additionally, if you miss the stud, you could damage your wall. The hole wouldn't be useful, as it won't hold the weight of the picture frame.

Lightweight items don't necessarily need to be hung with nails, and other options could work well. Banners and flags could be hung with thumbtacks, as these won't fall under their own weight.

All wall hangings will have some damage to the wall, unless it is an adhesive hook. If you do move out of your residence one day, or you plan to change your wall's decorations, you may want to add a small amount of putty to the area. After a quick coat of paint, it will look like no one ever hung anything on the wall.
