Moving Tips: Create a safe play area in your yard after moving in

Backyards should be safe for your kids to play in.

Backyards should be safe for your kids to play in.

The new home may have some obstacles beyond your tackling of the countless boxes you packed from your old house. When it comes to children, you may want to look toward the long-term, as it is important that they have a safe play area when running around outside.

Be mindful that if you have a small yard, this may difficult, and you may just have to go with what you have. However, those with larger areas may be able to make a great place for their children to stay safe while playing outside the new home.

You may want to set up a fence around the perimeter of the yard. This will ensure that the children won't roam if they leave your eye for a moment, and you will know that nothing can get in. However, if you don't want to have your yard so enclosed, you can add large shrubs to line the yard. This will act as a barrier, and will also look very appealing.

If you plan on removing any trees in the middle of the yard, it is necessary to remove the stump, or at least make a temporary barrier so that your child doesn't get hurt tripping on it. With kids running around, it is very easy for them to forget about the stump and topple over.

Finally, any pools should have a locked gate, or a ladder that is not set up at all times. If the pool is in-ground, be sure that you have a fence around it, no matter what. This will not only discourage children from going near the water, but it will prevent them from getting to it without supervision.
