Moving Tips: Be mindful of neighbors during your move

Don't block neighbors' driveways without asking during a move.

On moving day, you may want to get everything in and out as quickly as possible. This may not be a bad idea, but keep in mind that if you make a lot of noise, you may disturb your new neighbors. While some things are unavoidable, it is important to make a good impression when moving in.

Once your moving company has delivered the items and you head into your new home, be mindful of those around you. If your new place is an apartment, this matters even more. Carrying items through the halls and being loud may not seem like a major issue, but if neighbors are home they may get the wrong impression of you. Having a neighbor that doesn't like you from the start may mean that you will have problems with them throughout the time you live near them.

If you have a detached home, try to keep most of your noise inside. Discuss plans for where you will put all of your items while inside the home, and try not to clutter the yard and driveway up too much. If you can, make sure vehicles are not obstructing any other cars or driveways. If this is not possible, go to your neighbors, introduce yourself and explain to them that you need to do this for a set period of time. If they need to do something at some point during the day, be ready and willing to move vehicles at that time.

When you finally get all of your items in, you may feel inclined to have a party. While parties can be fun and could really help remove the stress of the moving day, keep in mind that you have others around you. It may be a good idea to shut all of the doors and windows if you want to turn the music up. If someone is outside, they can get an idea of your volume limits for both music and talking. This is a good courtesy for your neighbors who are trying to get on with their day, or just want to sleep.

If you are in an apartment, keep in mind that people will likely hear you through every wall. Keeping noise to a minimum is best, and informing neighbors of get togethers may help prevent trouble.
