According to the survey, nearly one in four homeowners - 22 percent - are having troubles paying down their mortgage, with 7 percent finding it extremely difficult.
Other findings included in the report indicate that almost all of those who are encountering problems making their monthly mortgage payments believe they owe more than their home is worth, some believing their home would sell for significantly less than its price when they purchased it.
The Harris Interactive Poll of 3,100 people taken between March 7 and March 14.
While the number of people behind on their mortgages is lower this year compared to last - down 7 percent - it's an indication people may be putting off their moving plans after all. Last week, a positive jobs report indicated homeownership may be easier in the coming months as employers added over 210,000 jobs to their payrolls and the employment rate fell to its lowest level since 2009.
