Cost of moving: Wisconsin

From big cities and sports franchises to fishing villages, Wisconsin has something for everyone.

From big cities and sports franchises to fishing villages, Wisconsin has something for everyone.

Wisconsin offers a bit of everything to its residents, from fishing and wildlife to big-city entertainment. As home to a variety of national breweries, major sports franchises and a Big 10 school, the state has it all.

When the moving company arrives to take you to The Badger State, don't forget your fishing pole and tackle box. Wisconsin is flanked by the Mississippi River to the west and two Great Lakes - Michigan and Superior - to the east. In between are 33,000 miles of rivers and 15,000 lakes full of fish ranging from bass and black crappie to walleye and trout.

Fishing isn't the only sport the state is known for. The Milwaukee Brewers moved to the city in 1970 from Seattle. They have yet to win a World Series title, but that's ok - main rivals the Chicago Cubs haven't won since 1908. The Green Bay Packers also share a rivalry with neighbors to the south the Chicago Bears, which dates back to 1921, but the Packers have enjoyed considerably more championship success than their Windy City counterparts. The green-and-gold team have won four Super Bowl titles compared to Chicago's one.

Music lovers will be delighted to learn that Milwaukee's Summerfest is the largest outdoor music festival in the world. Don't believe it? Just check the Guinness Book of World Records. Each year, the city draws hundreds of musical acts for a week-and-a-half-long celebration of sound. The performers are as varied as REO Speedwagon, Britney Spears and Prince, providing something for everyone.

The state is renowned for its schools and universities, as well. The University of Wisconsin system has 13 campuses and serves more than 160,000 students. UW - Madison is a Big 10 school with a competitive football team. It also holds a world-class biotechnology research facility.

If this already has you packing up your belongings and filing for residency, consider the state's overall cost of living. According to real estate guru Bert Sperling, the state is about on par with the national average when it comes to expenses. The median home costs roughly $144,000, though prices get a bit higher once you move into the more populated urban areas like Madison. Median home prices in that city are $192,000.
