Cost of moving: Healthy places for men

Guys who like to work out should consider one of these healthy cities.

Guys who like to work out should consider one of these healthy cities.

If you're a guy who loves to work out, eat healthy, stay fit and be happy, then get packing, because it may be time to move to one of the cities Men's Health magazine recently identified as among the best places for men.

Topping the list is Burlington, Vermont, where the local medical system is one of the best in the country. Low rates of obesity also contribute to the area's healthy reputation. Patients in the area are aware of their medical screening options and take preventive care seriously. And with TownUSA.org placing the median home value at just over $131,000 and median rent at $618, Burlington is an affordable place to call home.

From one northern clime to another, the next best place for men is Madison, Wisconsin, according to Men's Health. Despite the brutally cold winters, guys in this capital city spend more time playing basketball than in almost any other city (probably because it's an indoor sport). Real estate guru Bert Sperling says this town is the most secure large metropolitan area in the country, and with a median home price of just over $206,000, it's not terribly expensive, either.

If cold and snow aren't to your taste, call up the moving company and haul yourself down to Plano, Texas, home to some of the best running and biking trails in the country. Men's Health says the Texas town has a large network of sidewalks so you can jog right onto its 65 miles of trails. Housing in Plano is 5 percent lower than the national average, and low property taxes helped make the town one of Salary.com's best cities to build wealth, according to information from the city.

Guys looking to perk up their attitude toward life can make their way to San Jose, California, Men's Health suggests. The area is a mecca for mental health, with low reported rates of depression and sadness, and a progressive outlook that embraces the idea of seeing a therapist to drive the blues away. Sperling agrees, placing this Silicon Valley city at the top of his healthiest places list. Home prices may be enough to turn that smile back into a frown, however. An average home will run nearly $563,000, according to Sperling's Best Places.
