Moving Tips: Home lighting options

LED lights may help you save money and energy.

LED lights may help you save money and energy.

Your new home may not have all the amenities that you need, and this may include some items that weren't involved with the packing process. If you want to make your home more luminous, but still be environmentally friendly, installing some new lighting may do the trick.

LED lights are the most environmentally-friendly options on the market, and they don't take nearly as long to light up as fluorescent lights do. These options are typically more expensive, but since these use significantly less energy than other options, it could be a purchase that pays you back over time.

Another good way to save money and energy, as well as prevent you from keeping lights on in a room when you are doing something else, is light sensors. The technology has been around for years and can keep you from wasting energy. Having sensors installed to track movement when you enter a room can be a good way to prevent you from being frustrated by higher utility bills.

There also may be a benefit for keeping some of those lights on when you are not home. Light timers in some parts of the home could be great, as they make you feel better when you're out working or can't get home before dark. These are not expensive and can be purchased at just about any home goods store. All you have to do is plug lamps and other portable lights into these if they are close to windows.

Make sure that you have extra bulbs in your home, as you don't know when a light will break or burn out. This can be hugely important, as lights in areas with stairs or long hallways can cause a problem if there aren't windows around, or nightfall already occurred.
