Appleton Historical Facts

Who doesn’t have a little pride for their hometown? When you get settled at your new home, test your new friends’ knowledge of the city you used to call home. Here are a few fun facts:

  • The city was incorporated as a village in 1853 and became a city a few years later, in 1857.
  • Appleton had a pair of national firsts: It was the first city to run an electric streetcar company and the first city to have a hydro-electric powering station to provide electricity for the city.
  • Magician Harry Houdini, actor Willem Dafoe and author Edna Ferber are all from Appleton.
  • The Fox River runs through the city, but not in a conventional way. It flows north its entire course throughout the city, and it empties into Lake Michigan in Green Bay.
