View a cannonball embedded in the brick wall of Norfolk’s oldest building. It stays as a reminder of the siege that destroyed two-thirds of the city during the Revolutionary War on New Year’s Day, 1776. 

Nauticus National Maritime Center 

Nauticus is home to the world’s largest battleship, the USS Wisconsin, which was in operation during WWII,  Korean War and the Gulf War. While you’re there, check out Mile Marker Zero, the 3,000-square-foot mural painted on the dock behind the Nauticus campus. 

Douglas MacArthur Memorial 

This museum and research center in downtown Norfolk is dedicated to Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War. The archives hold 2 million documents, 86,000 photographs, 130 photo albums and 111 films in addition to sound recordings, newspapers, rare books, scrapbooks, and microfilms. Admission is free. 

Chrysler Museum of Arts 

The Chrysler Museum of Art is regarded as one of the country’s top museums, with a varied and expansive collection of more than 30,000 pieces. 

Waterside District 

Norfolk’s revitalized waterfront neighborhood features a wide selection of restaurants, clubs and music venues. It’s also a popular spot for festivals and community events, and within walking distance of The Tide (Virginia’s first and only light rail system).
