Syracuse Snapshots: Five Places to Visit Before You Go

Don’t miss the chance to explore your favorite Syracuse attractions once more before you hit the road.

Onondaga Lake Park

Take a break from packing and stretch your legs at “the Central Park of Central New York.” This 8-mile greenway just north of downtown features four trails, a skate park and a dog park. You can also drop by The Salt Museum while you’re there to take in some Syracuse history.

The Carrier Dome

If you’re moving during football, basketball or lacrosse season, catch the Syracuse Orange in action one last time at the “Loud House.” This 50,000-seat facility is the country’s largest on-campus basketball arena and the largest domed stadium in the Northeast.

Erie Canal Museum

Housed in the Syracuse Weighlock Building constructed in 1850, the Erie Canal Museum is a tribute to an engineering marvel and its role in America’s social and economic development. The museum is filled with artifacts, maps and interpretive and interactive displays, along with a full-size replica canal boat.

Dinosaur BBQ

Regularly rated among the best barbecue spots in the country, the original Dinosaur BBQ is a Syracuse staple. Enjoy an assortment of delicious menu options — including wings, ribs and brisket — along with live music in a vibrant space.

Upside-Down Traffic Light

You’ll find this oddity in Tipperary Hill, a West Side neighborhood. According to legend, the Irish immigrants who lived in the area in the mid-1920s took exception to the new traffic light with “British” red on top of “Irish” green. After the original light and several replacements were broken, the city agreed to place the green light on top, and it’s been there ever since!
