Athens got its name from John Milledge, who bought 633 acres and donated it to the university. Education
The Clarke County School District provides public education to Pre-School through 12th graders in the area. There are 14 elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools. The district has more than 700 full-time teachers and more than 11,000 students. There are a number of private schools in the area, too.

Of course, the University of Georgia is the primary higher education institution in Athens, but there is also Athens Technical College and Piedmont College as other options.
