Can’t-Miss Attractions

Maybe you’ve already seen them all, but who knows when you’ll be back? Enjoy these sites once more before you go.

The Pineapple Fountain

Not only can you wade in this popular gathering spot, you can get married there, as well! Why pineapples? They represent hospitality and are a common design theme in Charleston.

Angel Oak

Believed to be the largest live oak east of the Mississippi River, the Angel Oak is one of the most photographed icons in Charleston. It’s 65 feet high, more than 25 feet in circumference and estimated to be between 300 and 400 years old.

Charleston City Market

Capture some flavor of the Old South, people-watch and find unique souvenirs all in one spot. Pro tip: Check out the hand-woven baskets made from local materials, including sweetgrass and palmetto leaves. This craft originated in West Africa and has been passed down among artisans for centuries.

Fort Sumter National Monument

Catch a ferry (keep and an eye out for dolphins!) to a small island in Charleston Harbor to see the place where the first shot of the Civil War was fired in 1861. Explore stone caverns, get a close-up look at several Civil War-era cannons and visit the museum during your self-guided tour.

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

Tour America’s oldest public gardens and the Drayton family home while getting a glimpse of local wildlife. There’s also a zoo and nature center on site.
