 ## Keeping safety first when moving belongings out of state

By choosing U-Pack®, you’ve already taken the first step in keeping your things safe during a long-distance move.

We’ll look after your belongings during transit, but there are steps you can take to secure the equipment while it’s on your property and prepare it for shipping.

## U-Pack safety and security measures for all moves

We take the safety and security of your items seriously, whether you're using a [U-Pack trailer](https://www.upack.com/how-upack-works/equipment/moving-trailer) or a [ReloCube® moving container](https://www.upack.com/how-upack-works/equipment/moving-container). Here’s what we do for our customers:

- Include standard liability coverage with every shipment at no extra charge
- Lock trailers during transit
- Provide practical advice from moving experts to help you keep belongings safe inside the equipment, from [packing](https://www.upack.com/moving-resources/packing-tips) and [loading tips](https://www.upack.com/moving-resources/loading-tips) to [the best moving supplies to purchase](https://www.upack.com/moving-supplies-and-boxes)
- Secure the storage areas at our service centers

### What can you do to help keep the equipment secure?

Besides locking the equipment (learn more in the following two sections), here are some steps to take for the best outcome:

- Consider parking a vehicle in front of the ReloCube doors overnight.
- [Park the equipment](https://www.upack.com/articles/what-you-need-to-know-about-parking-moving-equipment) in a well-lit and visible area, if possible.
- Never leave an unlocked trailer or ReloCube unattended.

## How to secure a U-Pack moving trailer

There are two places to lock a moving trailer: on the door while you’re still loading or unloading, and on the [bulkhead](https://www.upack.com/how-upack-works/equipment/moving-trailer/bulkhead) (divider wall), which you’ll install after loading.

        ![U-Pack moving trailer with a secured bulkhead.](data:image/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg'%20viewBox%3D'0%200%201%201'%2F%3E)

You’ll keep the keys to your bulkhead lock so you can access your things after delivery. If you used your lock on the outside trailer doors during loading, you must remove it before we pick up the equipment. The driver will secure the trailer with a company-owned lock for transport.

### What type of lock works best for the moving trailer?

For moving trailer bulkheads, U-Pack recommends an outdoor-rated lock with a shank at least 2 inches long and 1/4 inches or less in diameter. Outdoor-rated locks resist rust and corrosion, which makes them ideal for use both outside the trailer and inside on the bulkhead. The 2-inch shank makes it easier to secure the lock properly.

## How to lock a ReloCube

[ReloCube](https://www.upack.com/how-upack-works/equipment/moving-container) doors have a latch for installing a padlock to keep the contents secure during transit and storage. The latch holds both doors closed, and you’ll need one lock for each Cube.

While loading, we recommend locking the doors whenever the Cube is unattended. Just like with the bulkhead in the moving trailer, you’ll keep the keys for the locks you use on ReloCubes.

### What type of lock works best for the ReloCube?

U-Pack recommends an outdoor-rated lock with a shank at least 2 inches long and 3/8 inches or less in diameter for ReloCubes. Rust and corrosion-resistant locks are necessary because the Cube’s latch is located on the outside of the equipment and might be exposed to rain while parked at your home. Locks with shanks at least 2 inches are easier to maneuver and fully engage.
