 encoding="utf-8" ?## Are Enterprise® trucks a good option for long-distance moves?

While Enterprise’s car rental service is helpful when you need a vehicle, renting one of their box trucks for moving long-distance can be complicated and expensive.

Let’s examine the equipment, requirements and costs for renting an Enterprise truck and explore how their services compare to U-Pack®, an alternative DIY moving solution.

  ## How Enterprise truck rentals work

As with most rental truck companies, when you reserve a truck with Enterprise, you’ll pay to rent the vehicle for a set number of days (or miles) and then return it. During the rental period, you’ll pay for fuel (gas or diesel, depending on the vehicle) and be responsible for loading and unloading the truck.

Where Enterprise differs from other companies is with their box truck return policy. When renting from Enterprise, you almost always have to return the truck to the pick-up location. This isn’t ideal for a long-distance move since you would have to deal with the hassle and expense of returning the truck to your previous hometown. Plus, you’d then have to travel back to your new home.

There are select locations that allow one-way rentals. It’s best to contact the closest Enterprise location to see what’s available in your area.

## Box truck sizes

Enterprise offers several equipment options, including pickup trucks, cargo vans and stakebed trucks, but box trucks are the most common vehicles for moving. The box trucks range from 15 feet to 26 feet.

**Note: According to the Enterprise website, the actual size and payload (total weight of cargo and passengers) of each truck can vary based on the year, make, model and location.**

### 15’ parcel van

- Holds belongings from 1-3 rooms
- Dimensions: 15’L x 96”W x 84”H
- Maximum payload of 5,000 pounds
- Pull-out ramp (or lift gate on select models)
- Seating for 2 passengers
- Gasoline powered
- No vehicle towing

*[Learn about other one-way van rental options](https://www.upack.com/articles/one-way-van-rental).*

### 16’ cabover truck

- Holds belongings from 3-4 rooms
- Dimensions: 16’L x 96”W x 90”H
- Maximum payload of 7,500 pounds
- Lift gate for loading
- Seating for 3 passengers
- Diesel powered
- No vehicle towing

### 24’ box truck

- Holds belongings from 5+ rooms
- Dimensions: 24’L x 102”W x 102”H
- Maximum payload of 10,000 pounds
- Lift gate for loading
- Seating for 3 passengers
- Diesel powered
- No vehicle towing

### 26’ box truck

- Holds belongings from 5+ rooms
- Dimensions: 26’L x 102”W x 102”H
- Maximum payload of 10,000 pounds
- Lift gate for loading
- Seating for 3 passengers
- Diesel powered
- No vehicle towing

## Rental requirements

Here’s what you need to rent and drive an Enterprise truck:

- Be age 21 or older (There are different fee structures for drivers aged 21-24 and those 25 and up. Some states may allow rentals at age 18 or have other driver age restrictions.)
- Present a valid, unexpired government-issued driver’s license (No CDL is required.)
- Proof of insurance
- A valid credit or debit card

## Locations

Enterprise has truck rental locations in mostly major cities across 48 states, Puerto Rico and 9 Canadian provinces. Equipment can vary by location.

## Cost

Enterprise box truck rates vary based on the equipment size, the rental timeframe and the miles driven.

Let’s look at a quote for an example move from Nashville, TN, to Atlanta, GA, in April 2024 using a 26’ box truck. This price was accurate at the time of posting. Actual moving costs will vary.

$505.50 (includes 3 days at $149.00 per day, TN rental tax, business tax and sales tax)

But that’s not all you’ll pay. There are the following extra fees:

- Added to your base rental cost is a fee of $0.59 per mile driven, $354 for 600 miles
- Personal accident insurance is $10.50 ($3.50 per day)
- Damage waiver coverage is $135 ($45 per day)
- Supplemental liability coverage is $68.25 ($22.75 per day)
- Roadside assistance coverage $60 (coverage averages $20 per day)
- Cost of diesel fuel for 600 miles based on 12 MPG @ $4.10 per gallon is $205

The estimated total cost for the example move with Enterprise is $1,433.34. Plus, there will be an expense to travel back to Atlanta after returning the truck to Franklin, TN, the closest Enterprise location with the 26’ box truck for the move.

## How does Enterprise compare to U-Pack?

With U-Pack, you don’t have to drive or return the moving equipment to the original location. We serve out-of-state moves in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.

We’ll deliver the equipment, and you’ll handle packing, loading and unloading with less hassle — often at a cheaper price when compared to [using a rental truck for a one-way move](https://www.upack.com/moving-services/compare-movers/truck-rental).

Using the example move from Nashville to Atlanta, the equivalent space of 21 linear feet in a U-Pack moving trailer costs only **$1,308.** There are no extra fees for fuel, taxes or liability coverage since those are included in the price.
