A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that children who move a fair amount experience recognizable consequences because of it. They are more likely to misbehave and perform more poorly in school.
University of Virginia professor and lead author of the study Shigehiro Oishi told the New York Times that he was originally interested in pursuing this research "because Americans are so mobile." After 10 years of studying more than 7,000 American adults, he found that American levels of well-being can be explained in part by residential differences."
Children who were introverted were more seriously affected by their family moving, the study found. Parents of extroverts don't have as much to worry about.
When moving with children, it is important to notify them about the event as soon as possible. This, along with involving them in the relocation process, can help ease their stress of leaving home and going to a new area.
