A dream for some Texas residents is finally becoming a reality. Part of Dallas, Texas' homeless population will be moving into apartments of their own.
A public housing tower will eventually become home to 50 of the city's homeless population, the Dallas Morning News reported. Seventeen have already found themselves in their new homes thanks to the building's owner, the Dallas Housing Authority.
The new residents will have access to on site counseling and mental health care, the Morning News said. This will be an affordable housing option for these residents since their rent will be solely based on their income, disability payments included.
The building's other tenants have been less than thrilled about the idea of having homeless residents live in their apartment building, according to the Morning News. They have openly opposed these plans and others like it. The city intends to have 700 other homes to house the homeless in Dallas.
There are cities across the country working on trying to get the homeless population off the streets by making public housing available for them.
