Kentucky Division of Emergency Management shelter coordinator Stephanie Gittinger said that "family pets are often overlooked in disaster planning. However, recent disasters have taught us this is an important and much needed component of disaster planning."
There are certain items a pet owner should always have on hand during a move. The first is a carrier to transport the animal, KYEM said. There should also be a first aid kit, sanitation supplies and familiar items - such as treats, bedding and toys.
Pet owners should always have a leash and collar with identification information on it, KYEM advised. Important paperwork, such as vaccination and other medical records should also be taken.
If long distances are being driven for a move, consumers should remember to take their pets out for frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. This can make their travel experience much more pleasant.
