Cities in the Spotlight: Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh has a unique geography.

Pittsburgh has a unique geography.

While many people like to live in cities that are near many other metropolitan areas, others prefer to move to cities near the countryside. If this sounds like a place for you to start anew, contacting your moving company and traveling to Pittsburgh might be a good idea.

The city of Pittsburgh has a population of more than 307,000. It is located in Western Pennsylvania, as well as the Appalachia region of the United States. It is approximately five hours from Philadelphia, but only two and a half hours from Cleveland. The weather can vary throughout the year, as The Weather Channel noted the average summer high is 85 degrees, while the winter low falls to 20 degrees.

The landscape of the city is unique, as it is surrounded by two rivers - the Allegheny and Manongahela. These rivers join together and become the Ohio River in the city. This splits the city into sections, with areas on each bank of the converging rivers, as well as a large section in the middle.

It was formerly a center of the steel industry, but after becoming part of what is known as the "rust belt," Pittsburgh adjusted well and is a booming economic center. This may come in handy for those looking at prospective jobs in the area.

Pittsburgh is a passionate sports city and has three professional teams. The National Football League's Steelers play at Heinz Field, while the National Hockey League's Penguins call the Consol Energy Center home, and Major League Baseball's Pirates play at PNC Park.

There are also plenty of universities within the city's limits. It is the home of the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University, among many others.
