If you like the Mid-Atlantic, but don't want to move to the nation's capital, there are certainly plenty of options in the area. One city that may catch your eye is Baltimore, as the still-large area has plenty of leisure options, and is close to many other metropolitan areas.

Baltimore's population is comparable to Washington, D.C., as it has close to 620,000 people. It is only a short train ride from the capital, and two hours from Philadelphia, so packing up and heading on a short trip is not difficult.

The weather in Baltimore is typical of the Mid-Atlantic region, as The Weather Channel notes there is a summer high average of 87 degrees, while the winter low drops to an average of 24 degrees. This part of the country typically receives a varied amount of weather patterns, so it may be a good plan to prepare for vastly different conditions year-round.

There are many activities to do in the area, especially if you like beaches. Maryland is home to a significant amount of shoreline, and many residents travel to get some sun every summer. Kayaking and sailing are also popular activities in and around the city, as the mouth of the Patapsco River runs through Baltimore and empties into the Chesapeake Bay.

The city is home to multiple universities including Johns Hopkins University and Loyola University Maryland. Coppin State University and Morgan State University also call the city home. Baltimore is also a short drive from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Multiple sports teams reside in Baltimore, including two professional teams. Major League Baseball's Orioles play at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, while the National Football League's Ravens play down the street at M&T Bank Stadium.
