Anchorage may be a great place for those who love the wilderness.

If long winters and easy access to the wilderness are things that attract you to a new area, then you may want to fill up your moving containers with your belongings and head to Alaska. Anchorage could be a good choice, as you will still be able to experience city life, while still having a country option.

The city has a population of nearly 296,000 people, which not only makes it the largest city in Alaska, but the city makes up for nearly half of the entire state's population. Those living in the city get around via the Anchorage Public Transportation People Mover, the local bus system. This will help you travel to much of the city with little issues.

Anchorage typically has cold, long winters and short, mild summers. The Weather Channel noted that the average summer high temperature is 65 degrees, while the average winter low temperature is 8 degrees.

If you are looking for higher education option in Anchorage, there are many schools that may interest you. The largest school is the University of Alaska Anchorage, which is also the largest of the University of Alaska system. Charter College and Alaska Pacific University are also headquartered in the city. Anchorage also has multiple satellite campuses.

Cold weather influences recreational activities
Because the weather is colder for much of the year, this influences the popularity of the sports. While Alaska doesn't have a team in one of the four major professional sports, it does have a minor league hockey team. The ECHL's Alaska Aces play in Sullivan Arena. The University of Alaska Anchorage also has NCAA sports in the city.

The city is also the starting point for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which travels to Nome. This is one of the most popular sporting events in the Land of the Midnight Sun.

It is also possible to see the Aurora Borealis - or, the northern lights - in or near Anchorage. This typically occurs during the winter, and is considered one of the most unique events to see in the sky. If you plan on seeing these, be aware that they are usually unpredictable. While they happen in a certain time period, the exact time of day may be difficult to pin down.
