Best cities to get in shape

Sacramento may be great for those who love to exercise.

Sacramento may be great for those who love to exercise.

Active people need to be in a city that has multiple options to keep fit. If you think this fits your description, there are plenty of places around the country that may be good choices. But before you grab your moving boxes and schedule a date with your moving company, you will need to decide what is the best destination for you.
While you can find places to exercise in just about any city, there are some around the country that are friendlier to those who would rather take a run in the park instead of keeping up with their gym membership payments. This can be great not only for saving money, but being exposed to the elements may be able to help you get a more strenuous workout.
The capital of California is a staple for the fitness crowd, with Forbes rating the city highly. In its study, more than 80 percent of the city's population had exercised in the past month. There are also many people who avoid public transportation or driving when it comes to commuting. Instead, the city is a hot spot for those who like to bike or just walk to work in the morning. Northern California doesn't get the more extreme heat prevalent in Los Angeles, so this may make exercising more tolerable, no matter the time of year.
San Francisco
Cycling and running buffs may enjoy heading to Northern California. San Francisco has plenty of running and biking areas, as Prevention explained the city has more than 80,000 acres of recreational areas on the waterfront, alone. There are also plenty of spots throughout the city such as parks and other venues that can be great exercising areas. The region's temperate weather also may make it easier to exercise year-round without added stress from the heat or cold.
Connecticut is a place with favorable exercising terrain, and this is magnified in its capital Hartford. The city has multiple public parks, and is a great place for those who like to be active. Farmers' markets are a popular destination in the area, according to Forbes, so this may be a good spot for those who want organic, fresh produce. Golf is popular in the surrounding area, as well, which may make it good for those who like to casually hit the links.
Even in colder climates, outdoor exercisers find a way to get through a workout. This is especially true in Minneapolis. The winters can be harsh, but there are still many ways to exercise outside throughout the year. The city has nearly 90 miles of biking trails, not including its vast biking options on the street, Prevention explained. There are also plenty of parks in the city, and nearly every resident lives within a short walk from one. Because of Minnesota's landscape, there are also many other activities that fitness fans can utilize. Hiking is hugely popular in the state, while there are many areas that can be fit for canoeing or kayaking.
Washington, D.C.
The nation's capital is also a very friendly city for those who want to exercise, despite its very urban setting. More than four-fifths of the city's residents exercise at least once per month, Forbes noted. This is due to the city's many healthy options. Like Hartford, farmers' markets are a popular staple in the area. Additionally, a favored commuting option in the city is biking, while many people also find time to exercise at the many recreation centers available throughout the city.
