The department’s statistics show the jobless rate last month decreased in 19 states, remained the same in 17 and increased in 14. Anthony Chan, chief economist at JP Morgan Private Wealth Management, told the Associated Press, “These numbers suggest we've stabilized and started to show real improvement,” he commented. “But we're a long way from crafting the 'Mission Accomplished' sign.”
The four states that have experienced the worst of the economic downturn, Nevada, Michigan, California and Florida, all saw positive developments in their unemployment rates, but Nevada continues to boast the nation’s highest unemployment rate at 14.2 percent, according to the report. Furthermore, nationally, employers infused 151,000 jobs in October. Although it was the largest net gain in jobs in six months, the unemployment rate remains at 9.6 percent.
