Walkable cities cut down on emissions

Families who like to stay on their feet and not rely on vehicles may want to look into moving to cities where walking is the easiest option. A list of the 10 best cities to walk in recently was released by 24/7 Wall St.

Cities with dense populations make it easy for residents to walk for transportation, recreation, shopping and more. The top cities are scattered throughout the country, like San Francisco; Portland, Oregon; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Denver.

The area in the top slot - San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont - has a public transportation system that covers nearly 92 percent of the city, which is the fifth highest in the United States. San Francisco also caters to bicyclists, as its commuter rail system allows bikers to ride with their bicycles, and during rush hours, bikers can take a shuttle across the Bay Bridge.

The real estate market in San Francisco has been on a slight uptick, with an average listing price of $1.1 million for the week ending October 26, up 1.2 percent from the previous week, according to Trulia.
