An American Express Spending and Saving Tracker survey found that 64 percent of homeowners will be investing in a renovation project of some kind in 2011. However, there's only so much that they're willing to spend. Respondents said they plan on spending no more than $3,400 to refurbish their homes, which is almost half of what respondents said they'd spend last year in a similar poll.
"This year, consumers are spending smart and looking for ways to save when it comes to home renovation," said Pamela Condispoti, executive vice president and general manager of the Consumer Card Services division for American Express.
The survey found that homeowners were looking to improve their home's energy efficiency by investing in new doors and windows, insulation and roofing.
Sixty-four percent of respondents said they planned to improve their homes by doing the renovation work themselves. This finding runs counter to what a Coldwell Banker Real Estate survey revealed last month, which was that 87 percent of respondents wanted their properties to be "move-in" ready upon arrival.
