Paul Allen buys NYC penthouse

Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Paul Allen recently bought a $25 million penthouse in New York City that was sold off-market by the widow of a New Zealand businessman. The residence is located in the ritzy 4 East 66th Street address, where he already owns the penthouse located directly below.

Not much is known about the penthouse, but a real estate blog said the "barbell-shaped" home has about seven rooms with banks of over-sized windows and a wrap-around terrace with views of the city and Central Park.

Other residents of the tony building include Deutsche Bank director Kevin Parker, Texas oil bigwig Sid Bass, hedge fund guru Daniel Nir, and financier and philanthropist Ezra Zilkha.

Moving trucks may be a common sight in the area as well-to-do residents move in and out of luxury homes. The average listing price for homes in the Central Park area for the week ending September 28 was $3.65 million, down 1 percent from the previous week, according to Trulia. The median sales price from June to August 2011 was $2.2 million, up 76 percent from the same period the previous year.
