Contrary to a recent prediction by a real estate expert that people are increasingly looking to move to dense urban areas where they can walk or commute to work via public transportation, 38 percent of respondents to the BHG survey said ease of commuting by car would be a top priority when choosing a future home, as opposed to 19 percent who singled out public transportation access.
Nearby health and safety services would be the top criteria for choosing a new home location for 34 percent of respondents, followed by family friendly neighborhood (33 percent) and availability of retail stores (32 percent).
Twenty-one percent of respondents said access to cultural activities would be an important consideration when relocating, and 18 percent said good nightlife and restaurant options would be crucial. A recent Parenting Magazine ranking of the best cities for families emphasized the importance of culture and entertainment in naming Washington, D.C., number one for 2011.
