Topping the list, which was compiled by Kiplinger, is Ellicott City, Maryland - a Baltimore suburb. The source said that while the area does have relatively high housing costs, it also has one of the best school systems in the country, safe neighborhoods and an overall low cost of living. Because of its proximity to Baltimore and Washington, D.C., it also has numerous potential employers for those looking at relocating for work.
Ann Arbor, Michigan - home to the University of Michigan - ranked second on the list thanks to its high average income along with a low crime rate and high-performing schools.
Other cities finishing in the top five included College Station, Texas; Kennewick, Washington and Huntsville, Alabama.
The recognition is just the lastest for Ellicott City. Earlier this year, Money Magazine ranked it No. 2 on its list of the top 100 places to live, which focused on small cities. Eden Prairie, Minnesota, finished first on that list.
