Police in Houston say they are working to crack down on an unlicensed and fraudulent moving company
that has taken advantage of a number of local residents, KIAH-TV
Officers told the station that the companies advertise online offering an inexpensive move, then give consumers a contract filled with fine print, which results in massive charges. Soon after, the company switches names and continues the process.
"There's nothing that shows me these people are licensed to operate as movers
If they are licensed, they're doing it in violation of every rule and regulation for operating that type of business in the state of Texas," Scott Williams, an investigator with the HPD Major Offenders Unit, told the station.
Police say that because the movers are unlicensed, the moving contract isn't legal. Officers also cautioned residents to be sure they were dealing with a reputable moving company, and read their contract carefully.
Finding a moving company online can generate a great deal of uncertainty. Boston-based Humboldt Storage
and Moving says that it's important to check online reviews and make sure that companies have their own facilities and trucks.
