Moving Tips: What to store in the attic

Correctly packing items that will go into the attic is important.

Correctly packing items that will go into the attic is important.

While you are packing before your moving company arrives, you may want to consider the items that you won't be using in the home. Your attic can work as a great storage space, which you may need to utilize if you move into a smaller home, or you have belongings that you don't need at the current moment.

You won't need seasonal ornaments year-round, and it is likely the items you use one year will be the same ones hung up the next time. Because of this, it is a good idea to store them in the attic. Make sure they are in their own boxes, and clearly marked for storage in the attic, as this can help you identify these items when your moving company arrives.

Another group of items you won't need all the time are seasonal clothes. These can be easily packed and stored in the attic. However, when putting these items away, it is a good idea for you to place them in an area that is easy to access. These clothes may be used sooner if the seasons are changing, so keeping them within reach is not a bad idea.

Many other attic storage options

The attic can be a great storage space for unused furniture, especially if you are moving to a smaller home. Whether it is extra chairs, couches or even tables, having a place to put them may be a good idea.

Books can be stored in the attic if you don't have a bookshelf, or there are just too many to keep around. This can be a great idea, especially if you haven't read all of the books, or plan to keep them around.

There are many other items you can store in the attic if you don't have room for them in the main part of the home. Family heirlooms that you don't want out in the open may be better served in the attic. Also, if a family likes keeping old toys and other memories from their childrens' youth, a box in the attic could work well. Having a large place to put these items will make them safe from accidentally being thrown away, and it will be readily available in case you do want to present them in the home later on.
