Moving tips: Getting help with a move

Never underestimate the power of pizza when it comes to getting your friends to help you move.

Never underestimate the power of pizza when it comes to getting your friends to help you move.

Asking a friend to help you move is always a delicate conversation. There are a number of ways to get your buds to help you out, and some sure-fire solutions if they can't.

First, think about how much stuff you have and how many people you'll need to help you carry it all up and down the stairs as you transition to your new home or apartment. If you have especially well-muscled friends, you've hit the jackpot - they can help with heavier items like couches, TV sets and bookshelves. Make sure you have a few to ask just in case some say no.

This will probably not come as a shock: Most of your pals are easy to bribe. You'd be surprised how far a six-pack of beer and a pepperoni pizza will get you. Be sure to include those items in your moving budget.

If you're moving far from home to a new area where you might not have so many friends to help you out, consider a portable storage container. Some moving companies will drop off the container so you and your friends can fill it up, and deliver it to your new home wherever it might be. You can then unload it at your leisure. Perhaps you could use the extra time to make some fast new friends and ask them to help you move your stuff from the container to your new abode.
