Puerto Rico Electronic Export Information (EEI) Form

Will I Need to File an Electronic Export Information (EEI) Form?

If you’re moving to Puerto Rico, an Electronic Export Information (EEI) form, formerly known as the Shipper’s Export Declaration (SED), will be required if your personal items are valued over $2,500. This serves two purposes: data collection and enforcing U.S. export laws.

If you’re moving with U-Pack®, we will file the EEI form in the Automated Export System (AES) on your behalf. We’ll just need a few things from you first.

How to Let U-Pack File Your Electronic Export Information (EEI) Form

In order for U-Pack to file the EEI for you, you must supply:

  • An Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • The Schedule-B Export number (for items that require it)
  • A written authorization form

Download the authorization form and schedule B commodity list here.

Information about the EIN

An EIN is a 9-digit code used by the Automated Export System (AES) to identify ocean shipments leaving the USA. A social security number was previously accepted, but the Foreign Trade Division of the U.S. Census Bureau began requiring an EIN starting in September 2009.

You can apply for an EIN online, or by fax, mail or telephone. And the process is pretty simple. You just follow the steps as if you’re the sole proprietor of a business you’re starting, but then you’ll mark that you’re fulfilling federal export requirements on the last step.

How to Find the Schedule B Export Number

Schedule-B numbers are classification codes for goods going from the U.S. to another country. While the intent is to keep track of exported trade goods, Schedule-B export numbers also are required for household goods with a used value of over $2,500. So if you have antiques, artwork or other high-value items, you’ll need to provide the appropriate export number. The $2,500 rule applies to an individual item’s used value and the value of similar items. For example, if you had one painting worth $2,500 or five paintings that valued that amount together, you’d need to provide the code. Search for a Schedule B Export Code.

Filling out the Written Authorization Form

Federal law requires a Written Authorization Form in order for U-Pack to file the EEI on your behalf. We will email this form to you at the time of reservation (or you can download it above), and you must return it completed at least one week prior to your scheduled trailer or ReloCube® drop-off date. The form will be imaged and then U-Pack will file the EEI with the U.S. Census Bureau prior to your shipment departing. This process helps ensure your shipment is not detained.
