Moving from Memphis, TN, to Dallas, TX

Putting down roots in the Lone Star State

While planning a move from Memphis to Dallas, it’s a good idea to prepare for some differences between the cities, which are about 453 miles apart. Dallas has more than 1.3 million residents within the city limits, comparable to the 1.34 million in the Memphis metropolitan area.

But when you consider the Dallas metro area population of over 7.6 million people, you’ll find yourself putting down roots in a much bigger city in a significantly larger state.

A bit warmer and wetter in D-town

Warm summers and mild winters with little snow are typical in Memphis and Dallas. Average annual temperatures are a tad cooler in Memphis, ranging from 30 to 91 degrees, compared to 39 to 96 degrees in Dallas.

D-town gets plenty of rain, averaging 39 inches annually, but it is less than the typical yearly average of 54 inches that falls in Memphis.

Employment opportunities in the area

The cost of living in Dallas is higher than in Memphis, but your chances of finding work are good since unemployment rates are below the national average. Plus, like Tennessee, Texas does not have state income taxes.

American Airlines, AT&T, Bank of America, Lockheed Martin and Texas Health Resources are the largest employers in Dallas. Other key industries include defense, finance, and technology. If you want to venture a bit further,  you’ll find aerospace, aviation and oil and gas industry jobs in nearby Fort Worth.

Hit the books in Dallas

The Dallas-Forth Worth area has over 750 public and private schools for grades K-12, and 255 of the high schools are listed in the “Best High School Rankings” from U.S. News & World Report.

There are also 18 colleges and universities and more than 15 trade schools for adult learners. If you’d prefer to learn on your own, check out one of the 30 branches of the Dallas Public Library for books, educational programs, magazines, movies, music and more.
