Parkersburg at a Glance 

  • During the Civil War, Parkersburg served as a transportation and medical center for the Union forces. The town’s role as a transportation hub grew along with the gas and oil business following the war. 

  • Blennerhassett Island and State Park, Parkersburg’s top attraction, is where former Vice President Aaron Burr and settler Harman Blennerhassett allegedly plotted in 1805 to break off the western part of the U.S. and start a new nation. 

  • Julia-Ann Square Historic District is a great place to tour restored and preserved 19th-century homes, walk through beautiful gardens or attend a tea party. 

  • The Riverview Cemetery, located in the historic district, is where you can find the Grave of the Weeping Woman. According to legend, the grieving woman in the statue rises and walks through the cemetery during a full moon.

  • The Smoot Theater was built in 1926 as a vaudeville house. Warner Brothers bought it in 1930 and it operated mainly as a movie theater until the mid-1980s. The historic building has since been restored as live entertainment venue, where the original chandeliers hang from the Art Deco ceiling.
