Best known as the Home of Purdue, the university is probably the biggest draw to the Lafayette area. Purdue is best known for their leading agricultural and biological engineering programs, but the university also has one of the top ranking graduate schools in the country. The university not only brings in a large student enrollment, but it provides the largest portion of the area’s workforce. The Purdue Boilermakers football and basketball teams also give sports fans plenty of games to look forward to.

The Greater Lafayette-West Lafayette area has a combined population of about 98,000, and the enrollment of Purdue and Ivy Tech add another 50,000. With such a large student population, you can expect a diverse community.

Education obviously plays a significant role for Lafayette, and that goes for kindergarten through high school, too. If you have school-age kids, they will have no trouble finding new friends in this school community. There are four school corporations or districts.  The Tippecanoe County School Corporation is the largest, and there are more than 19,000 students total in the Greater Lafayette School Systems. If you have younger kids, you can start searching for a daycare facility that will suit your budget and location.

Living in Lafayette-West Lafayette

Weather & Location As far as the climate is concerned; there is nothing extreme to prepare for. However, you will be able to experience four diverse seasons, so you can enjoy a variety of seasonal activities. Lafayette is a comfortably-sized city, but the bigger cities are not far. Indianapolis lies 60 miles to the southwest and Chicago is 120 miles to the northeast. The closest international airport is the Indianapolis International Airport.

Transportation As far as local transportation is concerned, feel free to park the car and ride the city bus between Lafayette and West Lafayette. Regular fare is only $1, and there is a reduced price for the elderly and disabled.  Kids ride for free, and if you are a student at either Purdue or Ivy Tech, your fare is already covered. You just need to have your student ID on you.

Entertainment If you’re looking for something to do and keep you entertained; try exploring the three Downtown districts. The Chauncey Village Downtown District lies in West Lafayette between Purdue and the river, so here you’ll find a college-focused atmosphere. Be sure to visit the state’s oldest drive-in, the Triple XXX Family Restaurant, which dates back to 1929. Lafayette and West Lafayette is divided by the Wabash River, so the Wabash Riverfront Downtown District provides a transition between the Lafayette and West Lafayette communities.

Things to do The Riverfront is a top location for events and has lots of cozy coffee shops. The Arts & Market Downtown District moves into Lafayette’s historic neighborhoods and features a museum and gallery scene. In this district you’ll also find the Farmers Market, which is historic in itself. Dating back to 1839, it is one of the oldest outdoor markets in the country. On top of shopping for local goods, you’ll also find music and entertainment.
