In the mid 70s truck driving was considered a good ethical living, not so today. In the 70s no special license was required to drive a tractor trailer; just find someone to teach you and off you went.
Today, ever tightening regulations require special training, special licensing, drug testing, and more documentation. All which cost the driver more and more money. Not to mention the risk of prison if you have an accident.
The average driver today has followed a path of hard work, little pay, and poor treatment by insurance and trucking companies as well as the public in general. After a driver spends a month and a half attending an accredited school gaining the skills needed to be a success on the road, they are forced to work for over the road training companies that pay next to nothing.
Insurance companies are the cause of this because of the restrictions they place on local companies when hiring new drivers. "6, 12, or 24 months experience before you can be hired" that is what new drivers hear.
However, OTR companies can hire drivers and send them out on the road with little or no supervision. 50 hours with a trainer sitting beside them then the trainer is off to the sleeper while the new driver runs the load. Mean while the families are back home fending for themselves with little or no available support from the driver of the family.
25 Cents Per Mile is not a living wage. .25 CPM X 2000 mi per week = $500. That is before on road expenses such as food, showers, maps, safety equipment, boots, TAXES. By the time a driver is done with just the bare minimum they are lucky to send $150 a week home.
The average apartment cost over $1000 a month with utilities etc. Food prices have spiked nationally and are expected to nearly DOUBLE in the next 12 months (Estimate from US Department of Agriculture Jan 2011.) Fuel cost are rising and it is expected the national average price per gallon will reach $4.00 by fall 2011. Maybe sooner if situation in Egypt is not resolved soon.
In the companies (And others) effort to corner the market on freight, prices have been driven down in the past few years. Drivers are the big loser in this practice.
Increase freight rates.
Increase drivers pay.
Do not let insurance companies control who gets hired - If a driver is trained, if a driver is skilled, if a driver has a good record then they should get the job, PERIOD.
Tell trucking companies and insurance companies that slavery is not ethical.
Support the same minimum wage protection for truck drivers that every other job receives. Many drivers receive just $3-5 per hour... UNACCEPTABLE !!

A minimum of 5 linear feet seems too high for me for a distribution center pick up and drop off option. I packed so that I would be able to move using one trip with a car and a pickup truck. Since the drive from my new home and the drop off location was 70 miles, we didnt want to make more than one trip. This volume translated into 3 linear feet. Before I knew that the minimum was 5 linear feet, I thought I would have been able to save ~$80 after the adjustment.

One of the major reasons is the fact that you can wear them on every occasion. They look casual when worn with a pair of jeans. Womens leather jackets look elegant, smart and sophisticated when paired with tailored trousers or a formal dress. There are designs that give a classy touch to the outfit.
